Derby Cattle Market was originally in the Morledge and then it was moved to the Holmes in 1861.
Following the construction of the inner ring road it was then moved to a purpose built site on Chequers Road in 1970. The market prospered and grew, and at the time of the last foot and mouth epidemic in early 2002 was one of the major livestock centres in the UK.
Since the market re-opened after the epidemic, through-put has steadily increased, but with the loss of so many major herds of cattle and sheep it will be some time before through-put reaches the levels previously achieved.
Because of the lack of through-put and subsequently income the Council at the time, had to ensure that other sources of income were established. So much so that now the Site is used 24 hours per day, seven days a week for other activities, such as HGV parking, HGV driver training, motor cycle training, horse sales and one of the largest Car Boot Sales in the country.
HGV parking takes place on the rear car park with space for 150 vehicles each evening. Drivers can obtain meals on site, and shower facilities are available. The car parks are also used in the football season for supporters visiting the near by home of Derby County on Pride Park, a twenty minute walk away.
The livestock market itself attracts farmers from a radius of fifty miles and buyers from all over the country. There is a strong store trade at the Market on Thursday and fat cattle, sheep and calves are sold on the same day. Throughput at present is around 60% of that pre-foot and mouth, but is increasing month on month. Farmers and hauliers can take advantage of the excellent vehicle washing and disinfecting facilities to clean and disinfect their vehicles.
Cattle Sales start at 10.00 am on Thursday of each week, followed by other categories of livestock.
On Sundays one of the largest Car Boot Sales in the country is held (see links).
Horse Sales are held every second and fourth Saturdays in each month and attract hundreds of people to the site. Quality clothing and tack together with other items of memorabilia etc. are readily available.
On the first and third Saturdays in each month household goods such as furniture, Crown Derby and garden equipment are auctioned in what was the old dairy shed by the Market Auctioneers, Eaton and Hollis, and many a family in the area has been able to pick up antiques or household items at knock down prices.
Also on site are the NFU, Agricultural Auctioneers and a new Koy Carp and garden centre. This together with the animal feed and country wear units, and the Door Company offer a commercial centre rather than a traditional livestock market seen in other parts of the country.
At present the Council is currently exploring the use of bore-holes, and other uses of resources to promote the Councils commitment to the re-use of resources in its environment programme.
