major objectives, in ensuring that the City:

Markets:
- Provide employment opportunities
- Provide opportunities for start up business
- Generate competition and choice which keeps prices
to a minimum
- Generate income for the Council which can be reinvested
in services for the community
- Provide retail choice for the community
- Generate tourism income for the City
- Provide an outlet for local businesses and support
those businesses by buying their products and services
2 Safety and Security Derby's Markets:
- Provide the public with a safe and secure environment,
including CCTV in the Eagle Centre Market
- Provide staff on site to monitor and asses the public
- Ensure compliance with statutory legislation e.g.
Health and Safety Act, Food and Drugs Acts, Consumer Protection, Legislation,
Street Trading Regulations
- Provide the traders with secure premises that meet
appropriate standards
3 Attractive and Healthy Environment Derby's
Markets:
- Give the public the opportunity to purchase fresh
produce
- Help traders to work together to promote their wares
and the markets in general
- Help the council to control the environment of the
market
4 Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion, Ill
health and Disability Derby's Market's:
- Provide services under local democratic control
- Provide value for money goods to all families, particularly
benefiting those individuals on low income
- Make the main retail markets easily accessible by
public transport
- Ensure accessibility for the disabled
- Provide an opportunity for minority businesses to
trade as well as people of all ethnic groups
- Assist any member of the public who encounters difficulties
with traders over goods purchased
5 Sustainability Derby's Markets:
- Allow local produce to be sold locally
- Promote and run farmer's markets
- Has initiated a programme of waste recycling and energy
saving methods
- Provide local employment
- Allow the Council, through the control and siting
of the markets, to regulate the nuisance caused to local communities by
traffic, noise and pollution
- Provide jobs for 800 people with an estimated £100m.
value to the local economy, whilst at the same time ensuring that they
are managed within a system of democratic accountability
- Has installed low energy lighting to the market to
promote the Council's commitment to the environment.
