Eagle Market

Eagle Center Market

The Eagle Market stands adjacent to the largely new and refurbished Westfield Development which was the old Eagle. The Market replaced the Morledge Market which opened in 1933 and had outgrown its site.

When the proposals for the new Eagle Market were made in the early 1970s it was decided that this would be the ideal opportunity to re-site the market and subsequently the city had a market built that was unique in its concept.

A new market consisted of six-sided stall blocks giving a honeycomb effect from above.

Unfortunately, this did not prove very popular with traders and shoppers alike and when the fire regulations changed the Council decided to refurbish the market and return it to traditional lines. In 1992 the new market was opened by the Duchess of Kent. Since that time the market has been able to show that the quality of its goods and the standard of its traders are as good as anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

Shoppers can do their shopping in a light, clean, safe and dry environment which is suitable, like the Market Hall, to people who are both able bodied and slightly less able bodied to get around easily.

Many other traders moved from the old Morledge Market to the Eagle Market Market and their customers have been shopping with them since.

The market has attracted over the years some 600.000 - 900.000 visitors in peak months. Footfall is high and stalls are well stocked so that anyone visiting the market other on a regular or a casual basis can find what they are looking for.

Recent years have seen traders assist the Council in their efforts to reduce waste disposal by contributing to the Councils recycling programmes. Hundreds of tons of cardboard have been recycled, electricity in the market area is being reduced by the introduction of high light low fuel lighting scheme, which has been completed in the last few months.

Energy savings from this and other items which traders have been asked to contribute to have shown how commercial properties can promote a better environment.

Every year the market traders have a Christmas grotto, the proceeds of which goes to charities and in the 10 years proceeding 2007 they have raised nearly £100.000.

Many local charities have benefited from the Eagle Market traders generosity.
